The Kilim Bench
At Kayu Home, our kilim collection brings together reclaimed timber and handwoven textile in a way that is practical and distinctive. Each kilim bench is built from solid, responsibly sourced wood and upholstered in panels cut from vintage kilim rugs. The result is a versatile piece of furniture that works across different rooms without excess detail or ornament.
Smart lamps for living room lighting
Our approach to furniture is rooted in sustainability and skilled handwork. Many of our wooden frames are made using reclaimed wood salvaged from old buildings, then shaped by experienced carpenters using traditional joinery methods. Mortise and tenon joints and dovetail construction give strength and durability, suited to daily use.
The textile panels used on each kilim bench are sourced from genuine vintage kilim rugs. These flatwoven rugs are known for their geometric motifs and rich, natural dyes. Every section is cut and tailored by hand, which means pattern placement varies from bench to bench. No two are identical and slight irregularities in weave and tone are part of the history of the cloth and reflect its previous life as a rug.
We choose materials with care, favouring reclaimed timber and natural fibres in line with our wider values. This ensures that each bedroom bench or hallway seat supports a more responsible way of furnishing a home.
A Kilim Bench for the Bedroom
A kilim bench works particularly well as an end of bed bench. Placed at the foot of the bed, it provides a practical surface for folded blankets, cushions or a tray. The mix of patterned textile and solid timber adds depth without dominating the room.
In a bedroom scheme built around neutral tones, the colours drawn from kilim rugs introduce warmth and variation. Reds, indigo, soft ochre and charcoal look wonderful against plaster walls and natural flooring. The structure remains simple, allowing the textile to define the character of the piece.
As a bedroom bench, it can help organise everyday routines. It offers a place for laying out clothes or storing baskets beneath, depending on the design. The scale is compact enough for smaller spaces, yet substantial enough to be placed along the end of a king size bed.
A Practical Addition to the Living Room
Beyond the bedroom, a kilim bench can be used in the living room as flexible seating. Positioned against a wall or beneath a window, it provides extra space when guests visit. In open plan layouts, it can help define areas without blocking light or movement.
The tactile quality of the woven surface contrasts with smooth plaster, glass or metal. This balance works well in both modern and traditional interiors. Pairing the bench with plain upholstery or a simple coffee table allows the patterned top to remain the focal point.
Some clients choose to coordinate their bench with other kilim rugs in the same space. Others prefer contrast, using the bench as a single accent among quieter finishes. Each approach creates a different effect, shaped by scale and colour rather than excess decoration.
Choosing a kilim bench is a great way to select a piece of furniture made with respect for materials and craft. Reclaimed timber reduces demand for newly felled wood, and repurposed kilim rugs extend the life of existing textiles.
At Kayu Home, we work closely with small workshops and independent makers who share our focus on ethical production. Many of our items are made to order, and we are happy to discuss variations in size or finish where possible. This allows you to select a bench that fits your space precisely.
A kilim bench offers flexibility, durability and a clear link to traditional weaving techniques. Whether used as an end of bed bench, a bedroom bench or additional seating in the living room, it brings together reclaimed wood and vintage kilim rugs in a form that is built for everyday use.
