Three Drawer Carved Antique Coffer Table
Shaanxi, circa 1880
This stunning table is from Shaanxi province in central China and features deep carvings and metal studs on the drawers. Its full width top drawer displays a central flower and scrolling leaf design, replicated in the smaller carvings on the two lower drawers. These carved sections are set within a contrasting frame and sides in the original darker laquer finish. The extended table top provides an added display surface for photos and ornaments.
The table would once have been used both as a shrine for ancestor worship and for secure storage for valuables, with the drawers able to be locked. The dark sections would originally have been in a deeper black lacquer, with the drawers decorated in much brighter colors. Over time, the colors have faded and blended together to create a more neutral palette suitable for a variety of interiors.
