Elm Panelled Cabinet
Shanxi, China, circa 1880
The original darker finish of this cabinet has worn and aged to a wonderful patina, particularly towards the base, giving it a delightful warmth and character. The small panels in the doors and outer sections are set within rounded frames. There is a single small drawer between two wider drawers above the doors, an extended top surface covers the whole unit and is supported with beautifully carved spandrels. The doors themselves are fitted on rounded wooden dowels that slot into the cabinet above and below, so that no metal hinges are needed. There is a single removable shelf on the inside.
