Pair of Rustic Horseshoe Armchairs
Shandong, circa 1900
These chairs are from the northeastern Chinese province of Shandong. They are in a rustic, country style, with the horseshoe shaped top rail also forming the seat's arms. The curved rail of this style of chair would usually be produced from a single piece of pliable wood, such as willow, steamed and bent in to shape. The curved backrest of each chair is decorated with a carving of a deer, symbolising long life. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two chairs.
