Large Chinese Antique Elm Daybed
Shanxi, circa 1890
This large daybed was produced in Shanxi province in northern, central China towards the end of the nineteenth century and would have been used for seating or reclining during the day. It is made from elm wood, with the original finish worn over time to a reveal a more natural tone and lovely grain of the wood, adding lots of warmth and character. Its legs end in delicate horse hoof feet and are supported on all four sides by long stretchers, shaped with an S style curve at each end. Today this would work well as a large coffee table or would be ideal for seating at the end of a large bed or under a window.
