Carved Shanxi Elm Coffer
Shanxi, circa 1860
The original dark lacquer on this antique Chinese coffer has faded and worn over the years, leaving a wonderful patina. The chest is from Shanxi in central China, once used to store money and valuables. Each of the five drawers is beautifully decorated in carved relief to show flowers and vases, matched by the carvings on the bottom apron and on each of the side spandrels.
