Antique Chinese Apothecary Counter
Shanxi, circa 1860
This antique Chinese apothecary sideboard is an extraordinary piece. The bottom storage area was likely used to keep larger bottles and vessels, while the upper drawers, each divided into six sections and labelled at the front, provided a place to store herbs and plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. The elements that comprise the cabinet, from the old labels to the aged patina of the dark lacquer finish, come together to create a timeless piece with unparalleled character.
The sideboard is made of elm wood with robust, chunky frames and top surface. From a once dark lacquer finish, the top has aged to a beautiful combination of lighter elm and deeper lacquer elements as well as showing the marks of its extended life and use. It would now make an exceptional, unique sideboard, with space on the lower shelf perhaps for tableware.
