Iron Bound Pithara Chest with Doors

A striking wooden sideboard created from an old Pithara chest from Gujarat, northwest India, thoughtfully adapted for modern use. Traditionally used for storing grain and household goods, these large storage chests were an essential feature of Gujarati homes. This example has been converted into a practical sideboard by the addition of front-opening doors, allowing easier access while preserving the character of the original piece.

Crafted from solid wood and reinforced with hand-forged iron straps, the chest retains the robust construction typical of traditional Pithara storage. The surface displays a warm, natural tone with visible grain and signs of age, giving the piece a rich, timeworn patina. Decorative carved detailing runs beneath the top edge, adding a subtle ornamental touch that reflects regional craftsmanship.

The two front doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with a single shelf, providing generous storage for tableware, linens or everyday items. Original iron bands remain in place, emphasising the chest’s utilitarian origins while adding texture and visual interest. The doors have been fitted with large, iron ring handles in keeping with the overall rustic aesthetic.
