Iron Bound Patti Pithara Storage Chest

This imposing old chest is in a style referred to as a Pithara - originally a dowry chest used to store valuables, jewellery and silks. These substantial chests were valued for their durability and large capacity, often forming an important part of everyday domestic life.

This example is particularly striking for its richly detailed metalwork. The front and lid are covered with a dense grid of hand-worked brass and iron bands, decorated with small bosses and geometric detailing. Over time the surface has developed a deep, warm patina, with the metal and timber softly worn from years of use, giving the piece a strong sense of age and character.

For greater practicality in contemporary interiors, the chest has been reduced in depth, allowing it to function comfortably as a console or storage piece while retaining the bold visual presence of the original form. The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious interior compartment, ideal for storing blankets, cushions or household items.

Raised on simple block feet and fitted with original style locking hardware and side carrying handles, the chest remains solid and functional while showcasing the craftsmanship typical of Gujarati furniture.
