Chinese Northern Elm Storage Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
The beautiful grain of the elm wood on the cabinet's front and top is remarkable, with its wide, rugged grain resembling mountains. It would once have been finished in a darker lacquer, but only slight remnants of this are now still present on the three upper drawers and top frame. As such, the lovely texture of the wood is highlighted, creating a rustic, natural appearance that would fit well into both modern and classic interiors.
The chunky style features central doors set on wooden dowels, giving a minimalist appeal that complements the natural tones of the wood. The dark circular door hardware appears to be old, though is perhaps not original as there are signs of a larger circular plate having been previously mounted. The drawer handles are of a more recent design and the unit has a newly added removable shelf inside.
