Carved Six Drawer Sideboard
Xinjiang, circa 1920
This beautifully carved low sideboard comes from Xinjiang province in the far west of China - a huge region on the border of central Asian countries such as Pakistan and Kazakhstan. It woudl originally have been produced to use as a large daybed, much deeper in size and without the six drawers, which have been added recently using what were fixed panels as the drawer fronts. Today the unit would be ideal as a large stand for a TV, or as a dining room sideboard. The carvings on the front are in geometric patterns, with the deepr relief carvings below the drawers in a floral design. The finish would once have been in brightly coloured blues and yellows, and traces can still be seen on the drawers. Most of this has now been stripped or worn away to show the more natural colour of the pine wood.
