Large Tapered Natural Elm Cabinet
Shanxi circa 1890
The original finish on this elegant cabinet has been stripped back to show the natural, pale elm wood, showcasing its beautiful patterned grain, especially on the doors. The dark brass hardware is old, with ring handles that add to the simplicity of this piece. It comes from Shanxi province in central China and is in a classic 'round cornered' style. This simple design has rounded frames which extend down to the legs and taper up slightly to fit into the overhanging top. It has no metal external hinges with the door panels set within rounded frames that slot directly into the horizontal frames above and below below using wooden dowels. Two shallow inset drawers are fixed with a removable shelf above. The central post between the doors is a stylistic feature seen in later Chinese furniture and is also removable.
