Shanxi Tall Medicine Chest
Shanxi, circa 1820
This is a fabulous example of a Chinese medicine chest, around 200 years old but still with the old finish and hardware. It was produced in Shanxi province in central China and holds twenty-one drawers, each divided into sections to hold the various ingredients used in Chinese medicine. Each drawer still has the old label on the front to indicate the contents and there are further characters on the to and side frames of the chest. Apothecary chests like this one is such original condition are now quite rare and this would make a wonderful conversation piece in any room.
