Antique Red Lacquer Shanxi Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
This old cabinet in vibrant red was produced during the late nineteenth century in Shanxi province, in a style that is typical of the beautiful lacquered furniture of the skilled carpenters of the region. The lacquer is original, now worn and crackled in parts over time, creating a wonderful patina and adding a real sense of history and authenticity. It is unusual to find a cabinet of this age with the original decoration, as so often they are retouched or repainted, in this case the gold is still intact in parts, though largely worn in others to reveal the darker base below. It is decorated with gilding - a technique know as 'miao jin' in China- showing figures against a traditional landscape. This striking cabinet oozes charm and character and is complemented with its original heavy brass hardware. Inside there is a single removable shelf, along with a removable board that hides the compartment behind the bottom panel.
