Five Drawer Carved Coffer
Shanxi, circa 1800
This antique Chinese coffer is around 200 years old and comes from Shanxi province in central China. With two large drawers above three smaller ones, it would originally have been used to store valuables. The drawer fronts each incorporate lovely relief carvings, including Chinese characters on the bottom drawers to represent long life and good luck. The coffer would once have been in bright red lacquer with black on the drawers but the colours have faded over time to a much more subtle palette, with the natural colour of the elm wood showing through in places.
