Elm Daybed Coffee Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
This charming low table is simply styled with a natural finish that shows off the beautiful grain of the elm wood. It was produced in Shanxi province in central China and would have been used as a daybed for seating or reclining and is narrower and smaller than those typically made. The legs are recessed under an extended top surface and supported with double stretchers. Each leg has a simply carved 'cloud head' spandrel at the top, a common decorative element seen on Chinese tables and daybeds. Today this makes a lovely long coffee table or additional seating under a window or at the end of a bed.
