Cream Lacquer Apothecary Chest
Shanxi, circa 1850
Dating from the mid nineteenth century, this antique multidrawer chest would have been used by a Chinese apothecary to hold the various herbs and plants used in Chinese medicine. Each drawer is split into 4 compartments, with the front labelled to show the remedies that were once kept inside. Now quite a rare item, the crackled cream lacquer finish and characters in red make this one particularly attractive.
