Chinese Trepezium Elm Stool
Shanxi, circa 1900
This delightful Chinese stool has many of the classic features with S-shaped braces and horse hoof feet. However, we have rarely seen one like this, with a highly unusual trapezium shape seat, where the front and rear are slightly curved. It comes from Shanxi province in central China, produced in elm wood and was given a dark lacquer which is still intact though slightly worn over time around the sides and legs. The top surface of the seat has been lovingly used over the decades and has worn to reveal the paler wood beneath creating a wonderful patina and rustic feel.
