Carved Black Kang Table
Shanxi, circa 1880
This lovely, low level table is made from elm wood and commonly referred to as a 'kang table' as it would have been place on a raised 'kang' platform and heated from below in the main living area of a Chinese home during the winter months. The everted ends of the top surface suggest that this one might have been used for a religious purpose, perhaps for offerings. The wear of the original black lacquer has left a wonderful patina and the two small drawers are each beautifully carved in relief with leaves and flowers. Use today as an attractive low coffee table or side table.
